Brown Family || Farm Family Documentary Photographer

An incredible, and I mean INCREDIBLE session that got my creative head a spinning.

This year, I set forth on a new photography path that has been itching my creative nerves for quite some time.  I love country life, farm life and anything affiliated with my childhood upbringing that I so fondly speak of to whomever will listen to me 😉  I always wanted to incorporate it into my line of work and after much thought, planning and deliberation .. this is where things landed and hopefully, where my creativity will burst at the seams in years to come.

So the family that I chose for my “Farm Family Documentary” was the Brown Family, from the Westlock County.  I had asked the family to write a little something about this family farm and if you scroll to just below the next photo, you can read about the incredible and deserving family that got my attention.

“Doug and Vera Brown have lived together on Whistling Knoll Stock Farm since 1955 and Doug first started farming here 4 years prior. It was here that they raised their four children Dwight, Murray, Colleen, and Bonnie. Along with raising four children the family raised cattle (beef and dairy), chickens, pigs, and horses. Once all of the children started on their own journeys it was time to “slow down” and sell the dairy. Some 100 registered purebread Herefords and 100 grade cattle was enough to keep busy producing beef. Doug and Vera along with son Murray continued to farm about 5 quarters of land all close to the home quarter. Murray worked with his Brother Dwight at Browns along with tirelessly assisting his parents on the farm. Doug and Vera are active members in the community and always had an open door for visitors. Family is very important and throughout the years countless events have been held at the farm to bring the Brown family together. Doug and Vera’s four children, 13 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren all congregate as often as possible. In the Spring of 2017 Doug and Vera moved to Westlock with a lot of their old neighbors at Brookside Village. The house was empty for less then a day when Murray’s son, daughter in-law, and two children (CJ, Stephanie, Knox and Gunnar Brown) moved into the farm house. Doug (90yrs old) and Vera are still is on the farm several days a week assisting Murray with the day to day operation. After being away from the farm for 13 years CJ has returned with his family while still working out of Edmonton as well as traveling around the prairie provinces for work. The Brown family still all work together to raise beef cattle and crops on the same farmstead for 68 years and 5 generation and counting.” – CJ BrownAmara Dirks Photo - Farm Family Documentary Photographer
